Our Mission

Promoting open knowledge and open data for a more democratic and transparent society

Identity

Identity

The Open Knowledge Foundation Greece was founded in 2012 and is a non-profit organization that promotes open knowledge, open data, transparency, and participation. Since April 2013, it has been the official chapter of Open Knowledge International (Open Knowledge Foundation). Open Knowledge International is a non-profit global network of people passionate about openness, who use technology and education to empower people to process data, create new information and knowledge, and share them with the rest of society.

At Open Knowledge International, we do this in the following ways:

Transparency

International Network

We coordinate an international network of individual and collective initiatives for openness.

Participation

Opening Information

We promote the opening of important information and monitor the level of openness worldwide.

Innovation

Impact

We support people in learning more about openness and acquiring data processing skills. We collaborate with organizations seeking to achieve positive change in our society.

Collaboration

Management

We work to develop and support efforts that promote opening data and making use of it.

Collaboration

Consulting Support

We provide advice and training on a commercial level with the aim of fully utilizing the potential of open data.

Mission

This is the world we choose. We want open knowledge to become a mainstream movement, as natural and important to our daily lives and organizations as global concern for the environment is today.

Open Societies

Open Societies

We want to see open societies around the world, where everyone, without exception, has access to important information and the ability to use it to improve their lives.

Knowledge

Knowledge

Knowledge gives power to the many, not the few.

Data

Accountability

Organizations and companies with "special" powers will be identified and held accountable.

Information

Data Availability

Essential research information that can help us address major challenges such as poverty and climate change will be available to everyone.

To achieve these goals, we must raise the profile of open knowledge and increase awareness of its importance. We must change mindsets, policies, and business models of large organizations so that opening information becomes accepted and desirable. We must strengthen the ability to understand, communicate, search for, and use information worldwide. We must create and support partnerships between governments, businesses, and civil society to use data in order to hold power accountable and tackle serious issues. We need tools (technical, legal, and educational) to make working with data easier and more effective.
